The Thesis

The last dozen of months has been spent drafting a thesis with some of the thoughts that I have written about here.

Some notes:

• A thesis is a strange thing. It is, fundamentally, a learning exercise. You learn to write, to research, to edit, and to think better. So, by the time you’re finish drafting it, you are better at all of those things. This means that looking back at it, you see a lot of warts from when you were a less capable writer, research, editor, and thinker. I see a lot of warts looking back at my own. I take that as a good sign. I think this thesis captures, accurately, my thinking as of April of 2026 … I doubt it will capture my thinking in September.

• I will keep this version up to date if I make updates over time. I will add a changelog to the end if I do.

Final thoughts:

I still think that the quality of the criminal justice system is being undermined by a case management system that grew organically and is starting to show the cracks. This is not because of a univeral “culture of complacency” but instead of ramping complexity and resourcing that simply cannot keep up. I worry that these cracks will eventually erupt under the time pressures of Jordan – there are far worse ways for a criminal justice system to fail than to be slow. That said, I am optimistic, hopeful even, that we can do better and I am heartened that I am not alone in thinking so.
